I am the David C. Zimmerman Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the Cullen College of Engineering (CCOE), University of Houston, Houston, TX.
I earned the Bachelor degree in Information Engineering and the Master degree in Control Systems Engineering from the University of Padua, Italy, and received the PhD degree in Automatic Control from the Automatic Control Department at Lund University, Sweden, with the supervision of prof. Rolf Johansson. After that, I conducted my postdoctoral training first with the Control and Signal Processing Lab at the Melbourne School of Engineering, University of Melbourne, with prof. Erik Weyer, working in large scale water distribution networks, and later at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University, in Cambridge, MA, working on automated insulin delivery systems for people with diabetes under the guidance of prof. Francis Doyle.
At CCOE I am leading the Laboratory for Advanced Learning, Artificial Intelligence and Control, a multidisciplinary effort at the intersection of model-based control, data-driven decision making systems and artificial intelligence. My areas of research interest include modeling, system identification, machine and reinforcement learning, model-based and data-driven control, with applications in diabetes care, neuroscience and autonomous aerial vehicles.
